Spirited away…

The group project…

It  took a bundle of energy to convince the hole group on an idea, its really tough to work with other designers that have a different vision of how the final outcome would look like everyone believes there idea is the best. how we resolved this issue is by listening to everyones ideas then try to combine them together so in the end everyone is happy. We decided on many ideas but they kept changing along the way because we kept having new ideas better ways to creating  it in a different way. at first we wanted to create a maze, trying to create a lost atmosphere but then when we saw the space that we chose it wasn’t enough space and it would take a lot of time to build, so we ended up with creating a piece of the maze so its more  of a path then a maze.

Along the way of painting the walls white we had an issue,…

Painting the walls of our path with paint was a bad a idea because when it dried it curved and we searched of ways to straighten it out by ironing it and applying weight on the back but still didn’t work and was time consuming. to resolve the situation and with the time we had we decided to cover the cardboard with paper so its lighter and less time consuming.

The Intent

During this project I discovered that i work best under pressure  for some reason. I got a chance to play with photoshop, which is something i struggled a lot with, i never got the hang of i always felt that illustrator is better, but after the work shop with tareq i got more comfortable and discovered several new features and techniques that photoshop even had. i found it easier to draw with the pen tool then in illustrator.

To be completely honest I got this idea from the comic scene of batman slapping robin. First  I drew the female with the niqab (covering the face), meaning that  even women that cover their face get harassed by men, when they are clearly not interested. In this sign the male is trying to give his number but gets denied by a slap the card his holding is his phone number and there are 8 to show the right amount of number in an actual phone number.

Behind the scenes…

Saying No!

When creating signs the first thing that came up to mind was traffic signs so when ever we were designing it we would referenceing  to traffic signs of it being flat. So these are a couple of different styles of a No flirting sign. Saying no without using the red sign made my design more interesting because at first i was thinking of placing a male and female then a red line across the hole thing. But when we were restricted of not using it, it made me think deeper of ways of saying no and it just made it more interesting to just to look at but as well as when designing it, its just historical.

In Doha (especially) flirting is a common thing, to harass girls by simply just throwing words at her when they pass by, so this idea made me want to create awareness that not everyone is interested in your words or number. So my target audience are male Qatari well it happens everywhere in the middle east but for now I’m aiming at Qatar  from the age of 20 and 35. This sign would be placed in malls and popular restaurants  such as in katara and the pearl of Qatar.

This project i found it difficult to understand what a sign actually is other then a traffic sign, i don’t know why why it was hard to simply understand that anything can be a sign and not just only a traffic sign, after several lecturers about sign how to identify it, i had so many ideas for what i could create into a sign and putting in mind that it should be used in somewhere public.

Signs that i found:-

combining all of the signs that we found as a class.

First attempt

Playing with photoshop effects to merge the images instead of it looking like a collage.

During the cirques and hearing others comments on their posters it really helped me apply them on my poster. At first I hate it that hole project because it was so confusing and I was always unsure if what i was doing was right, but after talking about with my class mates and in cirtiques it really helped me understand it, its like a puzzle you have to understand where everything goes so that it looks complete in the end. I found it challenging to create a poster without it looking like a collage and just didn’t think that my 10 items make sense together in one poster so instead of hating it i decided to work with what i had and do my best to make it the best that it can be.

“My personal object brings a bundle of joy to me; it’s my first lunch bag to grade one that my father bought me. I remember that I did not let my father leave me and made him stay with me the whole day because I was too nerves and shy. The bag has a secret department at the bottom, which made me feel like the cool kid with a cool bag. I used to make a huge fuss with my mother about what she should put in my lunch bag, I would always tell her to add more sweets so I could share with my friends in class. The object become more meaningful when it started to be used by my sisters after me, it became a shared object between us. The lunch bag is small made of denim with a rainbow strap. The front face of the bag had a colorful stitched drawing of a female cat with whickers. The bag is still in good shape and is usable therefore I hoping to keep safe for my child one day.”

For this project at the beginning we were not told what we were going to end up with as an outcome and just focus on the process to avoid any overthinking and brain burn outs. At first we were told to bring an object that has a great deal of history to it, we then shared the object with class and were told to  write about what the object is and how to feels and looks likes, which helped a lot with table of Divergence!

This is what my class mates described my object in their perspective with no clue what the story behind and who it belongs to.

Starting the chart at first I did not understand what to write for you, us, and them. This is were i really struggled and started to dislike the project.

first 20 images using different media, for my first 20 i used mostly illustrator and photographs, when really we need a variety of media so after the first critique we were pushed to use other media then what we used the first 20. As it was the first critique it was very helpful and helped me understand what it is that is wanted from me to create, and made the rest of the process less stressful and became more confident in what I was creating.

It was really frustrating to create my keywords and meaning into images, I had to really think about it and create it in a way that what the word really means to me. For this two nots its means how the lunch bag was shared by me and my siblings so i created two nots in red string to show that blood related idea.

All of the experiments i created for some, some don’t really visually connect with the bag but more with the story of the bag. After the final bunch of experiments we were finally told what the out come was going to be and it was a poster! at first i thought how on earth are these images going to combine into a poster its going to be more of a collage then a poster, i was un sure and not happy that its going to be a poster!
